THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2012 - JOHN McCUTCHEON

7 pm, doors open 6:30 pm

BYOB and food allowed

$20 advance,

 $23 at the door

John McCutcheon is one of America's most respected and loved folksingers. As an instrumentalist, he is a master of a dozen different traditional instruments, most notably the rare and beautiful hammer dulcimer. His songwriting has been hailed by critics and singers around the globe. His thirty recordings have garnered every imaginable honor including seven Grammy nominations. He has produced over twenty albums of other artists, from traditional fiddlers to contemporary singer-songwriters to educational and documentary works. His books and instructional materials have introduced budding players to the joys of their own musicality. And his commitment to grassroots political organizations has put him on the front lines of many of the issues important to communities and workers.

Even before graduating summa cum laude from Minnesota’s St. John’s University, this Wisconsin native literally “headed for the hills,” forgoing a college lecture hall for the classroom of the eastern Kentucky coal camps, union halls, country churches, and square dance halls. His apprenticeship to many of the legendary figures of Appalachian music imbedded a love of not only home-made music, but a sense of community and rootedness. The result is music - whether traditional or from his huge catalog of original songs - with the profound mark of place, family, and strength. It also created a storytelling style that has been compared to Will Rogers and Garrison Keillor.

The Washington Post described John as folk music’s "Rustic Renaissance Man," a moniker flawed only by its understatement. "Calling John McCutcheon a 'folksinger' is like saying Deion Sanders is just a football player." (Dallas Morning News). Besides his usual circuit of major concert halls and theaters, John is equally at home in an elementary school auditorium, a festival stage, or at a farm rally. He is a whirlwind of energy, packing five lifetimes into one. In the past few years alone he has headlined over a dozen different festivals in North America (including repeated performances at the National Storytelling Festival), recorded an original composition for Virginia Public Television involving over 500 musicians, toured Australia for the sixth time, toured Chile in support of a women's health initiative, appeared in a Woody Guthrie tribute concert in New York City, given a featured concert at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, taught performance art skills at a North Carolina college, given symphony pops concerts across America, served as President of the fastest-growing Local in the Musicians Union, and performed a special concert at the National Baseball Hall of Fame. This is all in his "spare time." His "real job," he's quick to point out, is father to two grown sons.

But it is in live performance that John feels most at home. It is what has brought his music into the lives and homes of one of the broadest audiences any folk musician has ever enjoyed. People of every generation and background seem to feel at home in a concert hall when John McCutcheon takes the stage, with what critics describe as "little feats of magic," "breathtaking in their ease and grace," and "like a conversation with an illuminating old friend."

Whether in print, on record, or on stage, few people communicate with the versatility, charm, wit or pure talent of John McCutcheon.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2012 - THREE TALL PINES & ACOUSTICANA

7 pm, doors open 6:30 pm
BYOB & food allowed
$12 advance, $15 at the door

THREE TALL PINES is an award-winning quartet, playing bluegrass and Americana from the heart of New England. Though their faces are young, the group’s timeless originals and interpretations of traditional songs persuade listeners that bygone eras were just a short while ago. Impressive instrumentalists in their own right, they transcend their diverse musical backgrounds to achieve soulful harmonies and sensitive performances that draw audiences in and leave plenty of space for the story to shine through. Performer Magazine calls Three Tall Pines “bluegrass at its best." This Boston-based bluegrass and Americana band is rooted in tradition yet offers audienceaward-winning original songs, innovative arrangements on traditional songs, and strong harmonies backed by the raw feelings of early American rural life that appeal to a wide range of audiences. The band recently released a new record entitled "All That's Left" to critical acclaim. Come see why Three Tall Pines won the 2011 Motif Arts Magazine Award for Best Bluegrass Band, and the 2011 Band Competition at the Ossipee Valley Bluegrass Festival.

ACOUSTICANA's name says it all. The band plays American roots music on acoustic instruments. Bluegrass, Tex-Mex, folk, country, gospel, Cajun - it’s all here, respectfully informed by soul, blues, rock, pop, world music, and other contemporary influences. Great music has always been about creating new and original expressions, not simply repeating the voices of the past as perfectly as possible. That’s what we do, we take from the old and make something new. New music with an old feel. Add a healthy dose of originals, an impressive array of acoustic instruments, and a commitment to creative arrangements and vivid performances, and you get a musical gumbo guaranteed to please.

When not performing, this folk music duo is known as Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson, and you will need to go a long way to find a more talented and likeable couple.  Their music mixes the snow of their home in Vermont, the dew on the grass of a cool summer morning in the Appalachians, and the hard-scrabble grittiness and pluck of common folk the world over, together with the melancholy of lost loves, broken hearts, and shattered dreams, distilling it into an intoxicating, hauntingly seductive blend that you always want more of.

Ken and Rebecca’s multi-instrumental artistry’s range and depth is impressive, running from a shy lover’s soft, gentle caress to a hardened, bitter fist shaking against an evil fate, to a wry, ironic, self-mocking sense of humor.  Their voices, each a thing of wonder in its own right, when combined completely bowl you over and by turn lift you to dizzy heights of joy and dash you to aching sadness.  If you enjoy folk music with substance and style, your appetite for Hungrytown will never be satisfied.

Hungrytown has released two CDs, the self-titled 'Hungrytown' (2008) and 'Any Forgotten Thing' (2011), both of which have received high critical acclaim and much airplay in North America, Europe and Australia.

Hungrytown tours both the United States and abroad.  Their recent overseas travels have included the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland.  On their home turf, Rebecca and Ken tour the country in the notorious Blue Meanie.  This remarkable, fuel-efficient, solar-paneled and, well, blue customized camper van was designed by Ken to serve as a fully-equipped, four-season home, office, studio and Conestoga wagon for their instruments and sound system - all in under 22 feet!

For almost forty years, master bluesman Paul Geremia has survived solely by the fruit of his musical labors. Having abandoned all other means of support in 1966, he has been travelling far and wide ever since, performing in every capacity from street singing to club and concert bookings, throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Ge

remia has built a reputation as a first rate bluesman, songwriter, a "scholar" of early jazz and blues, and one of the best country blues fingerpickers ever. With his six and twelve-string guitars, harmonica, piano and a husky soulful voice - and with an innate sense of the humor as well as the drama of the music - he keeps traditional blues fresh and alive with his performances.

Combining his interpretation of the earlier music of people like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, Scrapper Blackwell, and Blind Blake with his original compositions, he has created a style which is very much his own and which has received accolades far too numerous to mention.

Geremia's background isn't typical for a bluesman. He is a third generation Italian-American who, as he laughingly puts it, "was born in the Providence River Delta." Growing up in a family that moved across the country and back numerous times weaned his appetite for music, history and travel, which served him well later on.

During the sixties, Paul noticed that the music he had enjoyed playing on harmonica (his first instrument) was now referred to as "Folk Music" and was enjoying popularity. During his short time in agricultural college, he was mostly occupied with learning guitar and hitch-hiking to where the music was. He soon left college and hit the road permanently. He found paying gigs in coffee houses and "basket houses" in cities and at college campuses and made occasional forays South and West in search of the music he loved and whatever gigs he could find.

During these years, Geremia crossed paths with people whose influences were beneficial to his development and understanding of the tradition. He worked as the opening act for some of the early blues "legends" thereby gaining an immeasurable depth of knowledge from people like Babe Stovall, Yank Rachel, Son House, Skip James, Howlin' Wolf, and many others, especially Pink Anderson, whose career he helped revitalize.

Geremia's most recent release, "Love My Stuff," is a great 18-song live collection built from many gigs recorded over a long period of time at various locations. He has recorded ten solo albums in all, and has appeared on numerous anthologies and compilation discs. His superb recordings have made him a critical favorite and place him firmly among the legends who inspired and influenced him over the past four decades.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2012 - FOREVER YOUNG - A TRIBUTE TO THE MUSIC OF NEIL YOUNG

Forever Young combines superb musicianship, great arrangements and a well-chosen set list of hits and rarities in finely saluting one of rock’s legends. The group consists of Rhode Island's most prolific and best known songwriters. They are all staples of the Rhode Island music scene and veterans of many national and regional tours. In addition, they are all fans and have been influenced by the music of Neil Young.

This award-winning band (winner of Motif Magazine's Best Cover/Tribute Band in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012) channels the harmonies of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and the instrumentation of Neil Young's bands Crazy Horse, Buffalo Springfield, the Stray Gators and the International Harvesters.

The Bonnie Strickman Trio features Bonnie Strickman (vocals); Hillie Dolgenas (keyboard); and Scott Lee (bass).

This special evening of jazz at Sandywoods Center for the Arts will reunite outstanding New York jazz musicians Hillie Dolgenas at the keyboard and Scott Lee on bass with acclaimed singer Bonnie Strickman, whose voice "has a startling luminosity and compelling emotional pull." This trio of stellar musicians will offer a program of songs from the American songbook including many beautiful and colorful ballads to which they bring great warmth, sensitivity and intelligence. "Bonnie has a voice that is equally at home with jazz and unadorned ballads. At times, her voice takes on an ethereal quality that adds unexpected depth to a standard love song."

Bonnie, Hillie and Scott have made music together for many years, primarily in clubs, hotels and renowned venues in New York City, where they all lived and worked.

Bonnie grew up in Fall River and graduated from Wheaton College. Bonnie’s professional career began with Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, and ultimately brought her to New York City. She settled in Greenwich Village and found success as both an actress and singer. She had a featured role in the long-running Off-Broadway musical hit I'm Getting My Act Together And Taking It On the Road, and she later toured the U.S. with the show. Other career highlights include singing for The Joffrey Ballet at City Center and performing at The Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention at Town Hall. Bonnie has sung at many premier NYC clubs, including the Chestnut Room at Tavern on the Green, The Ballroom, and Reno Sweeney. She has also appeared at clubs in Los Angeles, Montreal, Boston, Providence, Newport and the Virgin Islands. She released an acclaimed CD (Wonders Never Cease), co-produced and arranged by pianist Hillie Dolgenas and James Browne, which features the work of many acclaimed NYC jazz musicians, including bassist Scott Lee.

In 1996, Bonnie began dividing her time between New York City and Newport, singing once again in the New England area. She has worked with many of the area’s finest jazz musicians and has performed at The Inn at Castle Hill, The Hotel Viking, The Chanler, and Asterisk, as well as at many private events in the area. Now a permanent Rhode Island resident, living at the beautiful Sandywoods arts community in Tiverton which she helped found, Bonnie continues to perform while also giving private voice lessons at her home studio.

Hillie Dolgenas has performed and recorded with a wide array of artists including Bill T. Jones and Jennifer Muller (modern dance), Evelyn "Champagne" King and Colonel Abrams (R&B), the late Gary Knox (New Age), and Perry Robinson (jazz). Hillie and his trio have appeared in many of the finest jazz rooms in New York City, including Sweet Basil, Birdland, Visiones and the Chestnut Room at Tavern on the Green. He has also appeared with Evelyn "Champagne" King everywhere from Radio City Music Hall to The Apollo Theater to baseball stadiums throughout the USA as part of the Kool Jazz Festival. Hillie also writes, arranges, and performs his own original compositions.

Scott Lee arrived in New York in the late 70’s. One of his first gigs was touring and recording with Chet Baker. He went on to work with Lee Konitz, Zoot Simms, Al Cohn, Red Rodney, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Werner, and Joe Lovano. He has also accompanied many singers, including Nancy Wilson, Chris Conner, Morgana King, Betty Buckley, Helen Merrill, Suzannah McCorkle, and Anita O’Day. He has also toured and recorded with the Andy Statman Quartet, playing the music of the Jewish Mystics.

Recently, Scott has been leading his own group featured on his CD With Ease. He also records and plays with the Loren Stillman Quartet, and stays active in New Music ensembles in the New York area. He has two CDs on SteepleChase Records, One Thought and Leaving, both featuring original compositions. He is a member of the band Cloning Americana,  which has a new CD out on Sunnyside Records entitled For Which It Stands. Scott is currently a faculty member in the Music Department at Kutztown University.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2012 - THE PROVIDENCE WHOLEBELLIES

7 pm, doors open 6:30 pm
BYOB and food allowed
$10 at the door

The Providence Wholebellies are one of New England's most eclectic and entertaining ensembles, playing a colorful combination of varying acoustic music. Their vast repertoire ranges from American country and blues to olde English and Celtic, including everything from Appalachian reels, Irish aires, and Scottish pipe tunes to Johnny Cash and Woody Guthrie. The Providence Wholebellies have thrilled audiences throughout New England with their spirited, wild, and zany live shows. "A spirited mix of Celtic songs, old timey fiddle tunes, folk, country and blues." (Andy Smith, Providence Journal.) "Treat your loved one to some rollicking fun with the Providence Wholebellies." (Bob Gulla, Providence Phoenix).

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2012 - JOANNE LURGIO & MARC DOUGLAS BERARDO

8 pm, doors open 7:30 pm
BYOB and food allowed
$10 advance, $12 at the door

Joanne Lurgio is a truly gifted songwriter. Her stunning lyrics, combined with her beautiful voice and wonderful guitar work, will prompt you to chase your dreams. Her original songs include a tale or two about ordinary people who, like her, excel and inspire. Joanne’s newest CD release, Nothing Remains the Same, garnered the 2010 Album of the Year award at the Motif Music Awards.  The album was recorded and produced by Mike Dunbar in Nashville, the heart of music country.

Joanne's singing and guitar work, honed and polished in the venues of New England, have brought her much well-deserved recognition, including being named "Best Singer and Songwriter" in both 2007 and 2011 by Motif Magazine. Joanne's music has a distinct Americana feel with New England charm. She moves from country to bluegrass, from folk and r&b to gospel, all with a bluesy undertone.

Marc Douglas Berardo is the kind of hard working, fast moving, adventure seeking, keen observer who lives for the story and the song. In what amounts to song-length works of fiction, Berardo’s sharply drawn portraits cast a net on unusual and beguiling characters and places. With a painter’s eye for detail, and music firmly rooted in the great American sound, Berardo sings about circus retirees, expatriates in Florida rum bars, union iron workers, old poets, aimless New York City debutantes, near-death car crashes, hard-nosed fishermen and of course, the changes that experience brings to everyone. His latest CD, Downhauler, features songs about searching for home, the possibility of renewal, and the promise of adventure.

Marc performs an average of 150 gigs a year - everywhere from bars and house concerts to theaters and national festivals. Along the way he has shared the stage with a variety of the very best in acoustic, folk and rock music, including Livingston Taylor, John Hiatt, Cliff Eberhardt, blues legend Chris Smither, NRBQ, Steve Forbert,  Red Molly, Garnet Rogers, and Cheryl Wheeler, among many others. When not playing his songs all over the place, Marc Douglas Berardo lives in a heavily secluded and fortified compound on a river near the ocean in Westerly, Rhode Island.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2012 - ALTERNATIVE NEW YEAR'S EVE CELEBRATION WITH THE MARY ANN ROSSONI BAND

7:30 pm, doors open 7:00 pm

BYOB & food allowed

$10 advance, $12 at the door

ADVANCE TICKETS AT www.brownpapertickets.com/event/275592

Mary Ann Rossoni's music is cross-generational, original, acoustic rock n' roll, or, in today's terms, Americana. Her music is very upbeat and inspirational, but she's been known to throw a few hard-luck, gut-wrenching tunes into her sets for the weepy, pensive types. After all, her life isn't perfect either.

Mary Ann Rossoni is a singular talent. She has a warm, rich voice that is an absolute pleasure to listen to. She writes intelligent, honest, and sometimes funny lyrics and wraps them in gorgeous arrangements. Most of all she projects a warmth and personal reality that comforts the listener and urges you to let your guard down and really listen.

Rossoni's third album Timber & Nails is a watershed musical experience, the coming together of musical and lyrical talent, a distinctive and honest performing style, and the maturity and grace to tie them all together into one dynamic, quietly earth-shattering package. Timber & Nails is the sound of a songwriter growing cozy in her own skin. Her words and music come from the soul of someone who has finally, after a long search, discovered her identity as an artist.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 5, 2013 - MAGNOLIA FAIS-DO-DO! (dance lesson 7:30 pm, concert & dance 8 pm)

FRIDAY, JANUARY 11, 2013 - APRIL VERCH BAND

7 pm, doors open 6:30 pm
BYOB & food allowed
$15 advance, $18 at the door

Sandywoods is thrilled to announce that internationally renowned Canadian fiddler, singer, songwriter, and step dancer April Verch and her band will be with us on Friday, January 11, 2013.

April Verch doesn’t just perform music, she exudes it. The internationally renowned Canadian fiddler, singer, songwriter and stepdancer has a passion for performing and her goal is to touch the lives of those who are listening at any given moment. "The world is this amazing puzzle that we can’t fully understand, and music is the joy that pulls it all together and helps us make sense of it," says Verch, with a dynamic excitement and confidence that makes you believe her in a heartbeat.

On her eighth CD, "That’s How We Run," April explores the Southern mountain traditions known as old time music, but always brings her Northern roots with her. Plucky, straight-backed Canadian tunes fit so snugly beside ancient Appalachian airs that you’d think they’d been neighbors for centuries. When she sings her own songs, you feel sultry Southern air blowing through every wet, bluesy slide of "That’s How We Run," just as you feel the tight-shouldered Northern chill in her heartbroken "Still Trying."

Verch was born to traditional music, in Canada’s hard-working, hard-dancing Ottawa Valley. She was a local star at four, step dancing with her sister and winning awards at contests. The fact that they were for “Youngest Competitor” didn’t dampen her child-eyed enthusiasm. She became the first woman in history to win both of Canada’s most prestigious fiddle championships, the Grand Masters and Canadian Open. When Canada hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics, she was asked to represent her country’s music at the opening ceremonies.

Ottawa Valley music is a foot-stomping, open-minded fusion of Irish, Scottish, French, German, and Polish influences, sprinkled with tangy spices of American country music. The twang of the banjo and the driving Franco-Celtic pulse of the fiddle are as ingrained in April as snowbound winters and Saturday dances.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 12, 2013 - ATWATER-DONNELLY TRIO

7 pm, doors open 6:30 pm
BYOB & food allowed
$12 advance, $15 at the door, $10 kids, 5 and under free

The highly acclaimed husband-wife duo Aubrey Atwater and Elwood Donnelly present delightful programs of traditional American and Celtic folk songs, a capella pieces, old-time gospel songs, dance tunes, and original works.  Elwood and Aubrey blend gorgeous and unusual harmonies and play guitar, Appalachian mountain dulcimer, mandolin, tin whistle, harmonica, banjo, bones, spoons, and limberjacks.  An Atwater-Donnelly concert typically offers other surprises, including some Appalachian clog dancing and French Canadian footwork. Their performances are appealing to all ages.  With humor, audience participation, and a relaxed stage presence, Aubrey and Elwood explain song origins to create a deeper understanding of the music and its cultural history.

At Sandywoods, Aubrey and Elwood will be joined by a third member, Cathy Clasper-Torch. Cathy adds a deeply rich third dimension with fiddle, cello, and vocals.  Since 2003, the Atwater-Donnelly Trio has become extremely popular throughout Southern New England. Cathy has absorbed much of the Atwater-Donnelly repertoire and is now a staple in Atwater-Donnelly regional concerts, knowing just where to add an exquisite cello line, an exuberant burst of old-time fiddle, and a third and utterly unique voice.

Don't miss this wonderful evening of music, with special pricing for children.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2012 - LENNY SOLOMON BAND, PAUL RISHELL & ANNIE RAINES

7 pm, doors open 6:30 pm

BYOB and food allowed

$16 advance, $18 at the door

A little bit of Cambridge MA comes to Tiverton RI!

Lenny Solomon and Paul Rishell first met each other in the early 1970’s when they were both regular players at various Harvard Square haunts. Since that time their musical careers diverged, and only now will they be brought back together again to entertain at Sandywoods.

Paul Rishell and Annie Raines are equally passionate about their craft and devoted to the study and performance of a wide range of blues styles, from the syncopated acoustic guitar wizardry of Blind Lemon Jefferson and Son House to Chicagoan “Little” Walter Jacob’s swinging amplified harmonica. Paul has reached what Boston Phoenix writer Ted Drozdowski called “a place deep and resonant as Robert Johnson’s crossroads, where authenticity, soul, and a sense of purpose and commitment ring out in every note he sings and plays.” Annie has added vocals, mandolin, piano, and other instruments to her musical arsenal, while being recognized by top professionals and fans worldwide as the “queen of the blues harmonica.” Says blues legend Pinetop Perkins, “She plays so good it hurts!”

Touring internationally at festivals, clubs, and concert halls, and teaching workshops and seminars, Paul Rishell & Annie Raines have earned loyal fans around the globe. They have performed on diverse radio and TV shows including A Prairie Home Companion, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and PBS’s Arthur. They have performed and recorded with Susan Tedeschi, John Sebastian, Pinetop Perkins, and Rory Block. As a working team, Paul and Annie have racked up hundreds of thousands of miles on the road in the U.S. and Europe, collaborated on original songs, and released I Want You To Know (Tone-Cool/Artemis 1996), Moving To The Country (2000), the W.C. Handy Award winner for Acoustic Blues Album of the Year, and Goin’ Home (2004), which was nominated for two Handy Awards. "Rishell is a master of country/blues styles, particularly slide played on a National steel guitar. Raines, a rare female ace blues harmonica blower, shows that she is as strong an acoustic country harp accompanist as she is a harder-edged, electrified Chicago-style lead player à la the great Little Walter." (Billboard Magazine).

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Lenny Solomon's style has been compared to early Bob Dylan, Guy Clark, and Jerry Jeff Walker. Solomon began his career in the late 1960s when he played at Idler Coffeehouse in Harvard Square for over eight years. During his tenure as a solo performer he shared bills with people such as Chris Smither, Carolyn Hester, Bonnie Raitt, and Spider John Koerner. From 1980 through the mid-1990s, although he continued to write songs, Solomon rarely performed. During that period he raised a family and worked on environmental research at Harvard University. In 1997 Solomon got back into performing and formed a folk/country band. Performing his original material, he’s released four CDs: Four Shortened, Not Life Threatening, Armando’s Pie, and Maybe Today. His music has been aired on over 140 radio stations around the country and he has won a fistful of songwriting awards, most recently taking a Second Place in the 2012 International Indie Songwriting contest and runner-up status in the 2012 Song Of The Year Songwriters Contest. In 2008, one of his songs, "Let's Go To Mars," sat atop Neil Young's LWW songwriter website for well over a month. In a CD review for www.Southwestblues.com, Dianne Wells wrote "Although Mr. Solomon has a penchant for creating solid blues music with a lyrical social conscience, Maybe Today (2007) is a multi-flavored, 14-song collection encompassing dreamily reflective folk ballads, dance-friendly country shuffles, upbeat soft-rock melodies and rhythms and fusions with a Dylan-like blues foundation."

Traditional and original folk music from Scotland and beyond!

Alan Reid & Rob Van Sante, seminal figures of the Scottish folk revival, will perform at Sandywoods as part of their current US tour, premiering their new CD "The Adventures of John Paul Jones."

For forty years Alan was at the very heart of Scotland's famous Battlefield Band, touring the world, his masterful keyboard playing helping to shape the band's signature sound. Alan plays keyboards, accordion, and guitar, and sings with a wonderful Scottish lilt.

Rob van Sante, originally from the Netherlands and now residing in Leeds, has a lovely guitar style. He blends his playing and singing superbly with Alan. They have formed a new and successful partnership, with an excellent blend of modern and traditional folk music.

Alan & Rob have just released a marvelous new CD, "The Adventures of John Paul Jones," a tour de force that "weaves an almost magical spell conjuring visions of brooding Scottish vistas while just as easily slipping into a sense of joviality."

Don't miss this rare chance to catch this talented duo here in Rhode Island.

He is a participant in the annual Fisher Poets Gathering in Astoria, Oregon, has won two Sea Music contests in Washington State, and has heard other singers perform his compositions in a wide variety of venues throughout the country. Jon has been a RISCA Folk Artist since 1982. His music is performed and recorded by some well-known Irish singers, as well as maritime musicians. A frequent performer at AS220, the New Bedford Working Waterfront Festival, and the regular rounds of area venues, Jon's Sandywoods concert is a rare East Bay appearance. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2012 - THE SMILE MAKERS and THE KILLDEVILS

7 pm, doors open 6:30 pm

BYOB and food allowed

$8 advance, $10 at the door

The Smile Makers is the musical brainchild of Eric Donaldson and Nicole Sutka. These two multifaceted musicians draw influences from funk, folk, ska, bluegrass, and alt-rock. Their original music mixes seamless vocal harmonies with poetically crafted lyrics to create songs and performances that have been described by reviewers as "hauntingly beautiful." Their music is full of nuances and instrumental gems, encapsulating troubled experiences with melodies that conjure up both hope and foreboding. The cross-genre influences and complex rhythmic song structures put them in a musical genre all their own. This group is not all cute and cuddly. Their softer side is well-balanced with rip-rocking tunes and roaring bass lines that will make you want to get up and dance. Eric Donaldson (vox, guitars, ukelele, harmonica), Nicole Sutka (vox, bass guitars, flute, recorders, piano), Jeff Mac (electric guitars).

The Killdevils are Chris Monti and Jacob Haller, Providence, RI-based musicians who have been playing together in a variety of bands (blues, hip-hop, afro-beat, rock & roll) since 2002. Their Americana and blues-inflected music has been compared to that of Paul Geremia, Arlo Guthrie, and Greg Brown, and described as fresh, catchy, and quirky. The Killdevils are heavily influenced by country blues greats like Robert Johnson and Blind Willie McTell, as well as Jimmy Yancy, Louis Jordan and others. Monti and Haller are also great fans of early American country and traditional music.

Thank you for helping to make this a fragrance free event

This special evening concert will be a benefit for the Institute for the Study & Practice of Nonviolence

Joyce Katzberg has been entertaining New England audiences with her unique blend of topical and traditional, historic and hysterical songs for forty-one years.  Living her personal motto "pigeonholes are for the birds," Joyce's music is best described as folk-fusion. Folk music legend Pete Seeger says "Joyce has one of the best voices I have ever heard - she is a truly extraordinary person. " Providence actor/director/author Bob Collona says "Joyce Katzberg is the Moon Goddess with a giggle. She's the first girl that broke your heart, the jolly big sister you never had, the wise woman in the shack at the end of town, the tough kid that defended you against the town bully, and the big hug at the end of a bad day. She's not just entertainment - she is nourishment."

Joyce has been nominated "best female vocalist" by both the Providence Phoenix (1999 and 2001) and Motif Magazine (2005). In 2003, the Phoenix included Joyce on their list of "most influential" Rhode Islanders. In 2006, Joyce was honored by the University of Rhode Island honors colloquium for "career contributions using music as a tool of peace, non-violence and social justice - changing the world one song at a time."

The Raging Grannies originated in Canada, but quickly spread to many cities and towns in the USA. This Granny "gaggle" is centered in Westerly, RI, and includes members from Rhode Island and southeastern Connecticut. They are a motley group of elders who address their songs and voices to pressing issues of these times, often with a twist of humor. They invite the audience to enjoy the fun and join them in song.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2012 - LOUIS LEEMAN and MICHAEL TROY

7 pm, doors open 6:30 pm
BYOB & food allowed

$10 advance, $12 at the door

Louis Leeman, an active member of the New England music scene for three decades, is a singer, guitarist, and songwriter who resides in Swansea, MA. During this time, Louis has had the opportunity to play with many talented musicians in a variety of musical settings and styles.

As an opening act for Tom Rush, Leon Russell, Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett of Little Feat, Savoy Brown, Darrel Scott, Chip Taylor and Carrie Rodriquez, Louis has had the opportunity to play to audiences expecting the best. With roots in rock, folk, blues and country, Louis has been influenced by all types of music. As Louis says, "I listen to all kinds of music and it filters through my personality and slightly warped perspective. I play my own songs and songs by artists whose work I admire. I try to sound like me."

Michael Troy was born and raised in the rough-and-tumble mill town of Fall River, Mass. In many ways, his life reflects the lives of the hard-working common folk who populate this part of New England. Having spent parts of his own life as a mill worker, fisherman, laborer and carpenter, and most of his adult years as a husband and father, Michael has traveled many paths, and the experience and wisdom he's gleaned along the way echoes through his music. A magical storyteller with a gift for melody, a deep rich voice, excellent finger-picking skills and the ability to compose outstanding stanzas of substance, Michael's plaintive ballads speak of the hills and mills of Fall River and of childhood dreams not quite forgotten in the adult quest to make an honest living.

7 pm, doors open 6:30 pm

Christopher James Farias is a seasoned musician and a Sandywoods favorite. His personal evolution spans the complete gamut of practical performance experience and formal music education. Aside from 17 years of consistent study in guitar performance and pedagogy, Chris is also an accomplished vocalist, mandolinist, songwriter and music educator with a full length debut album and scores of recording and performing engagements to his credit. Notable performances include bills with the Spin Doctors, The Mohegan Sun Allstars, the Rhode Island College Symphony Orchestra (as composer), the Rhode Island College String Orchestra (as guest soloist), the Rhode Island Civic Choral, the Rhode Island premiere of the musical RENT, and The Boston Guitar Quartet. A rich family history in music laid the backdrop for Christopher's successful career in music.

Gary Farias grew up surrounded by music. His dad, a country steel guitar player, always had guitar players coming through the house. Gary gleaned a chord here, a scale there, and eventually became an accomplished musician. He played his way through college in various country music bands and eventually started his own group with brother Kevin and hometown friends Joe LePage and Bobby Tavares. They were called Alive n’ Pickin’ and shared the stage with John Hartford, Crystal Gayle, Jesse Winchester and many others. As a solo performer, Gary showcases his fingerstyle chops and strong vocals. He has opened for Iris Dement and Cheryl Wheeler, and has been the featured act in many clubs and coffee houses around New England. "Gary Farias is the consummate interpreter of the song. Whether it be a 16th century English folk tune or a modern day folk song, Gary infuses his intricate guitar work and strong vocal delivery to make it his very own."

Ryan Connearney is a native of Fall River, MA. He started out playing saxophone and drums in school, them moved on to keyboards, vocals, guitar, and bass. Ryan began performing in public at a very young age, appearing at venerable local music venues like the Waterstreet Cafe. He has been a member of several highly-regarded bands, including AlterEgo and the CJ Solar Band in Nashville. Ryan's talents and stage experience also extend to the world of musical theater, and he hosts the popular "It's An Old Hick Friday" podcast.

Justin Marra is a talented singer-songwriter devoted to all types of music, especially the sounds of the previous generation. He has transformed his introspective journal entries and electric garage band tunes into a fresh folky upbeat sound reflecting the influences of classic singer-songwriters. Socially conscious, and humorous at times, he and his work are best described as eclectic.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2012 - NUALA KENNEDY BAND

7 pm, doors open 6:30 pm

$15 advance$18 at the door

Nuala Kennedy is an Irish singer and flute player with hauntingly beautiful vocals, adventurous instrumentation, and an imaginative mix of influences.

Her singing and flute playing springs from the traditional music of Ireland and Scotland, and from the fathomless realms of her own imagination. A consummate performer with a buoyant personality, her music has been described as “unique,” “evocative,” and “soul-satisfying.” Nuala grew up in Dundalk, County Louth, on the East coast of Ireland, a musical area steeped in mythology and with long historical links to Scotland. She began playing traditional music at the age of seven when her father introduced her to her first whistle teacher. Nuala instantly fell in love with traditional Irish tunes and became a quick study. By the age of twelve she picked up the wooden flute and joined a local ceilidh band. She was winning awards by the time she was thirteen. “I never dreamed when I started playing in that very social and visceral way,” Nuala says, “that something that was such an organic part of my childhood would lead to a career in traditional music. All I knew was that I loved the music and that I wanted to play all the time.”

At the age of eighteen, Nuala moved to Scotland to study art at Edinburgh College of Art. Captivated immediately by Edinburgh’s traditional music session scene, she developed good friendships with many of the musicians there and was tremendously influenced by fellow Irish expatriate Cathal McConnel, who over the years played an important mentorship role in Nuala’s music. Her instrumental prowess deepened and her repertoire expanded to include both Scottish and Irish tunes.

Nuala began touring widely in Europe, Canada, and Australia with her first band, Fine Friday, a trio including guitarist Kris Drever and fiddler Anna-Wendy Stevenson. Nuala moved to Inverness in the Highlands in 2007 to deepen her knowledge of the Scots Gaelic musical traditions. This one-year intensive study of the best influences of the two cultures expanded Nuala’s knowledge and repertoire even more, shaping her instrumentation and vocals to an extraordinary level. During this time, Nuala formed her own band and released her first solo CD, The New Shoes. It was warmly received around the world. The album was voted traditional album of the week by The Irish Times, and traditional highlight of 2008 by Hotpress. The Irish Times called it, “A dazzling debut. Unhurried yet freewheeling, loose-limbed yet disciplined, [Kennedy’s] voice is a natural, earthy instrument entirely in concert with her woody flute lines. She is not only an exceptional interpreter of the tradition: her own tunes glisten with freshness. Spellbinding.”

In addition to performing the traditional music she grew up with, Nuala often works with musicians from other genres. She has performed and recorded with American hipster and indie-poet Will Oldham, French guitarist Philippe Guidat, Nova Scotian traditional musician Troy McGillivray and cutting-edge Canadian composer Oliver Schroer, with whom she recorded Enthralled, a duo album of entirely original compositions.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2012 - THE WOLF HONGOS & THE GREAT WHISKEY REBELLION

8 pm, doors open 7:30 pm
BYOB and food allowed
$10 at the door

The Wolf Hongos are a seven-piece, multi-influenced band from Fall River that mixes folk music from all over the world with punk and rock feel and sound. Cultural and dirty much like the town that raised them, the title of their manifesto might read "let's all dance and have a good time, bastards." The band members are Oliver Franco (accordion, vocals); Leeah Chumack (violin); India Scott (guitar); Zac Keith (guitar, vocals); Nick Franco (drums); Jeremy Sherman (bass); and Greg Mosher (saxophone). Born out of a smelly basement in 2009 in which they still reside, it's always been about the exploration. The first idea was "let's see what kind of noises this accordion makes" and the latest idea was "yes ... musical stutter," and everything in between is a test of the general hypothesis that is world folk punk. For the Wolf Hongos, live shows are high energy tussles through corners of the world. With passion for cultural music, and young recklessness. Relentless forces of Klezmer, samba, and flamenco collide for a noise all their own. They're a rolling party that not only asks for participation from the crowd around them, but demands it. A true example of the community music they hope to represent.

The Great Whiskey Rebellion is a high-energy band that combines traditional Irish music with driving rhythms and rock instrumentation. With a classically trained electric fiddle, jazz rhythm guitar, heavy bass, and pounding drums, the band draws from an eclectic range of ethnic influences, making each song their own. From foot-stomping Irish tunes to Appalachian folk music and Middle Eastern melodies, The Great Whiskey Rebellion is all about making music that gets everyone in the crowd on their feet.

Danielle’s latest release "Box of Troubles" is a bare bones expression of all these attributes, exploring the highs and lows that life has to offer. It has already received rave reviews.

Acoustic Root says "Danielle Miraglia’s guitar work keeps Delta traditions alive. Her steady thumb and playing style trace a direct line to the blues of the field and chicken shacks. Vocally, Danielle’s voice digs in, twisting within the delivery, seeming to break but more likely soaring before the fall. 'Box of Troubles' balances good times with the bad, her characters roles' defined and believable."

Join us for an evening of great live music!

FISH AND CHIPS is Gary Fish (guitar and vocals), Chris Goulart (bass), Christian Haler (drums) & Thatcher Harrison (guitar and vocals). Gary Fish has been writing songs and playing guitar all his life. He was influenced by jazz growing up as a child and by classic rock and roll. Gary has been writing songs about the sea and commercial fishing for the last 40 years, including " Captain Whipple," "Angel On A Wave," and "The Flight of the Dolphins." The Fish and Chips band brings Gary's music - known as "fishtunes" - to a whole new level!

What do you get when a pitch-perfect, grade-skipping guitar prodigy joins musical forces with his harmonizing, guitar-playing, English professor father? You get the playful, adventurous, intelligent, dead-on music of Thatcher & Stan Harrison, aka the BRUSH YOUR TEETH BAND.

Thatcher and his father Stan include several of their own well-crafted pop songs in each Brush Your Teeth Band performance. And plenty of cover music from artists like Dave Brubeck, the Beatles, Duke Ellington, the Indigo Girls & Donovan. And, of course, Thatcher plays the lights out of his guitar.

CHUCK WILLIAMS has performed throughout New England and coast to coast. This songwriter's music is of love gained, love lost, growing up & moving on. He can take you on a journey that makes you think, smile, and at times cry. His lyrics and melodies are a musical journey reflecting emotions of everyday life brought to you through the stories within his songs. Chuck has had the pleasure of opening for national touring artists such as Steve Forbert, Cheryl Wheeler, Kelly Joe Phelps, Rod McDonald, the John Young Band and Claude Bourbon. He has performed at many festivals including the Boston Folk Festival, the Boston Music Festival, and New Bedford Summerfest.

SATURDAY, JUNE 16, 2012 - RANI ARBO & DAISY MAYHEM

7 pm, doors open 6:30 pm

BYOB and food allowed

$12 advance,

$15 at the door ($10 for kids)

You won't want to miss this wonderful evening of music performed by Rani Arbo (fiddle, guitar), Andrew Kinsey (bass, banjo, uke), Anand Nayak (electric and acoustic guitars) and Scott Kessel (percussion). Kessel’s percussion rig is 95% recycled, featuring a cardboard box, tin cans, caulk tubes, and a vinyl suitcase in lieu of a bass drum. All the band members sing, and their four-part harmonies soar, whether on a haunting Appalachian ballad, a Springsteen rocker, or a Bahamian a capella song. Many of their songs plumb the human condition, with topics ranging from joy to death (a favorite), loss, aging, blackbirds, and red-haired boys. The band has jokingly dubbed itself an “agnostic gospel” revival show, but there’s truth in it; the refrain they hear time and again from audiences all over the country is that their performances really do heal.

The band recycles - but tries hard not to reduce - 150 years of American music.  They hang a Georgia Sea Islands song on a New Orleans groove. They write lyrics for an Irish fiddle tune and underpin it with an Afro-Cuban cajon. Leonard Cohen gets clawhammer banjo; Springsteen gets bluegrass harmonies. Their originals range from blues, to bluegrass, to Unitarian funk gospel, to crooner swing, to spooky folk-pop.

Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem celebrates America's past and takes it into the present. The band's newest album, Some Bright Morning, was just released on Signature Sounds in April 2012.

Rick Massimo of the ProJo says "The Gnomes play traditional music from Ireland and all over the world, and though they're acoustic, they play it loud, fast, and with soul. Their live shows are anarchic and energetic."

The Gnomes play an eclectic blend of world folk fusion music - Celtic, Scandinavian, Russian, Eastern European, Caribbean, klezmer, and originals. The band's members include some of Rhode Island's best known musicians: Phil Edmonds (Irish whistle and button accordion); Cathy Clasper-Torch (fiddle, keyboard, er-hu, vocals); Michael Fischman (guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, banjo); Peter Breen (bass, vocals); and Ron Schmitt (percussion), They combine their varied and extensive musical backgrounds into arrangements that have been described as "exotic, fresh, unique." Their spirited songs and instrumentals will take you around the world. It's music to groove to, to move to, and to be moved by. You can't help but "get gnomed" when you hear The Gnomes!
